Roasted Mushrooms

I think mushrooms are one of the most underrated and underappreciated foods, so I’m always in for celebrating how good and delicious they are. To me fried or roasted mushrooms is a taste of childhood. We kids would pick wild mushrooms and I actually pride myself in knowing quite a bit about the kinds that grow wild in the forest, from my dad, who is an avid mushroom hunter.

Sauteed Mushrooms

To me, food is all about details. That is why I collect various recipes for the same dishes. There are sometimes as many ways to bake a pie as there are cooks who make them. Even a smallest detail added can change the entire way of how this or that food tastes.

Mushrooms is not a food everyone loves. For instance, my sister probably wouldn’t eat mushrooms even at gunpoint. They have peculiar taste, but boy, if you aren’t averse to eating mushrooms, you have a whole new gourmet world open to you.

Watergate cake used to be my grandma’s favorite. For some reason, however, she very seldom made it for us kids, thinking we’re more into something with chocolate in it. But she use to make it for her friends, when they played bridge together or had tea.

Lemon Zucchini Cake

Whenever people are asked, which veggies and fruit go well together, they usually think of pair like peas and carrots or apples and pears or maybe strawberries and cream. Okay, cream is not a veggie or a fruit of course, but you get me.
Actually, one pair that is really, really good for each other is lemons and zucchinis. I love a slight lemon flavor in most zucchini dishes that I’ve tried.

Cherry Cake

Some time ago I often wondered, why do people even bother with growing sour cherries, they are just so… sour. If you want cherry flavour, get yourself bing cherries. If you want sour, um… a lemon? Boy, was I wrong.
Sour cherries are actually the cherries used in confectionary and dessert making. As surprising as it is, bing cherries taste and smell rather bland when cooked, and it’s the sour cherries that give all that cherry flavor to candy, cakes, pie fillings and what not.

Buttermilk Pound Cake

It’s really amazing what buttermilk does to desserts, cakes in particular. It contains a lot of milk acid, hence the taste, but when you bake a cake, the acid reacts with baking powder, emitting carbon oxide, which is the gas we all exhale. The bubbles of this gas make the batter much fluffier and it rises extremely well.
